Sea Power and National Power: Why Oceans Still Shape the World

The rise and fall of great powers has often been determined not merely by events on land, but by who controlled the seas.

Throughout history, maritime power has served as a force multiplier for nations seeking economic prosperity, strategic influence, and military reach. From the trading empires of the past to the global powers of today, the oceans have remained the arteries through which commerce, energy, and geopolitical influence flow.

In the 21st century, this reality is becoming even more apparent. As the Indo-Pacific emerges as the center of global economic and strategic activity, maritime power is once again moving to the forefront of international affairs. The security of sea lanes, access to critical trade routes, and the ability to project naval power are increasingly shaping the balance of power among nations.

For India, the importance of sea power cannot be overstated. Positioned at the heart of the Indian Ocean, India occupies one of the most strategically significant locations in the world. As India's economic interests expand and its global profile grows, maritime strategy and naval capability will play a critical role in safeguarding national interests and enhancing regional influence.

The relationship between sea power and national power is not simply a matter of naval strength. It encompasses trade, geography, diplomacy, economics, and grand strategy. Nations that understand and leverage the maritime domain often gain advantages that extend far beyond the oceans themselves.

In my latest Strategic Vanguard article, I examine why sea power remains a cornerstone of great-power status and why the oceans continue to shape the international order in the modern era.
