Mission Sudarshan Chakra: India’s Next Air Defence Revolution Is Not a Missile

What if India's next air-defence revolution is not another missile, but an intelligent network capable of seeing a threat, understanding it, predicting its trajectory and helping decide which weapon should engage it?

That is the larger strategic question behind Mission Sudarshan Chakra.

India's vision for Sudarshan Chakra goes beyond a single weapon system. It represents the ambition to develop a multi-layered missile-defence architecture capable of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure. But the real strength of such an architecture will depend not merely on the number or range of missiles available, but on how effectively India's sensors, command systems and weapons can operate together.

This is where IACCS — the Integrated Air Command and Control System — becomes particularly important.

IACCS provides an important network-centric foundation for India's air defence by connecting information from multiple sensors and air-defence assets. A radar can be thought of as an eye, while a missile battery is a weapon. IACCS is part of the nervous system that allows these different elements to share information and operate as an integrated system.

The next evolution could be the introduction of increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence.

Modern air defence may have to process enormous numbers of tracks simultaneously: aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, decoys and electronic signatures. AI could potentially assist with sensor fusion, target classification, trajectory prediction and threat prioritisation, allowing commanders to focus on the most important information rather than manually processing thousands of individual data points.

This becomes particularly important in the age of drone warfare. Using an extremely expensive interceptor against every inexpensive drone may not be economically sustainable. An intelligent layered defence could potentially match different threats with different responses—electronic warfare, guns, short-range interceptors, medium-range missiles or more sophisticated long-range systems.

The objective is therefore not simply to destroy every target.

It is to destroy the right target with the right weapon at the right time.

Quantum technology adds another potential layer. India is developing quantum computing, quantum communication and quantum sensing through its National Quantum Mission. It would be premature to claim that Sudarshan Chakra is already a quantum-powered air-defence network. However, quantum technologies could eventually contribute specialised capabilities in areas such as optimisation, secure communications and advanced sensing.

The deeper transformation is therefore from platform-centric warfare to decision-centric warfare.

The future battlefield may be determined not simply by who possesses the longest-range missile, but by who can detect the threat first, understand it faster, make the right decision and respond before the adversary can change the situation.

That is decision superiority.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra could ultimately become much more than a missile shield. If India successfully integrates its existing air-defence networks with AI, advanced computing, secure communications and emerging technologies, it could move toward an intelligent national air-defence ecosystem.

The eyes will be the sensors.

The nervous system will be the network.

The brain will increasingly be AI.

The weapons will deliver the response.

And the strategic objective will be simple:

See first. Understand first. Decide first. Strike precisely.
